I he Pageant is open to all married women in the state who are fbteen years old or older who are interested in competing in the Mrs. America Pageant to be held in Las Vegas the last week in April. Contestants wilt compete in the categories of interview, swimsuit, and evening gown and the winner will receive an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas for the Mrs. America Pageant and gifts from state merchants. Applications may be obtained by writing to tYie Mrs. North Carolina Pageant, P.O. Box 3681, Wilmington. N.C. 28406 or by calling 919-799-4507. Carolyn-Dodd Prince of Wilmington is the reigning Mrs. North Carolina. Now in its ninth year, the Mrs. America Paoeant was created to recognize the one person most ignored in all major beauty competitions-America’s married woman. Significantly, it is the only nationally televised pageant exclusively dedicated to America's 52 million wives. Mrs. America 1985 will win cash, a mink coat, a 1985 automobile, a trip to London with her husband, a T.V. and a personal appearance contract, and a trip to the Mrs. of the World Pageant held last year in Hawaii. Mrs. North Carolina, who will be selected in Wilmington March 30, will have the opportunity to become Mrs. America and as Mrs. North Carolina will make appearances in the state for the year of her reign. Strawberry Festival/ Rescue Day Attention area clubs and churches! The organizational meeting for the 1985 awberry Festival/Rescue ly will be held Tuesday, January 29th at 7:00 in the Vanceboro Library Audi^ torium. We need your help to keep the Festival a growing tradition for our community. All civic groups, clubs, and churches are requested to send a representative. All interested individuals are welcome! PNE Graduates Have 100% Passing Rate Mrs. Winnie Cotton, Director of the PNE(Practical Nursing Education) program at Craven, recently received word that 100 percent of our 1984 graduates passed the North Carolina .j^^|ard of Nursing Examination ^TOt was given in October. The Craven graduates posted a mean score of 559, far excelling the passing rate of 350. In a letter directed to Mrs. Cotton from Ms. Carol Osman, Executive Director of the N.C. Board of Nursing, congratula tions and praise were extended to Craven’s nursing faculty and administrators for the dedication and hard work that is reflected in the excellent performance shown by our students. Craven Community College congratulates our 1984 PNE graduates. Jerry Thomas Hardesty (left) 37, of Beaufort confers with state Secretary of Transportation James E. Harrington following his appointment as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Transportation. Hardesty Appointed RALEIGH—North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Secretary James E.' Harrington announced today the appointment of Jerry Thomas Hardesty of Beaufort, North Carolina, as the new Deputy Assistant Secretary. In his new position Hardesty will assist the Secretary in the administration of departmental programs and policies and will act as the department liaison with the public in the explanation of the Transportation Improvement Program (the department’s basic planning document for seting highway construction priorities over the next 10 years). He will be the department representative should problems with field operations or personnel arise. Also he will supervise activities in the Ferry Division and in Division 1, 2, and 3 which include the following counties: Camden, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Bertie, Hertford, Northampton, Chowan, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell, Washington, Beaufort, Pitt, Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Greene, Lenoir, Jones, Brunswick, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, Duplin and Sampson. Secretary Harrington said, “Governor Jim Martin and I are delighted that Jerry has agreed to accept the position of deputy assistant secretary. He will be an asset to the department and a key member of our management team, especially since he comes to us with such exceptional administrative talents.” Hardesty, 37, and a Carteret County native, has owned and operated a car dealership in Morehead City and has worked in the insurance industry. Active in professional and civic organizations, Hardesty has been a trustee at Carteret Technical College and has served on the following boards of directors: N.C. Automobile Dealers Association, Branch Bank & Trust Co., and Carteret County Chamber of Commerce. Listed in Who’s Who in North Carolina in 1973, he was also selected as one of the ‘‘Outstanding Young Men in the South” in 1974. He is a member of the Jaycees, the Rotary Club, and the Ann Street United Methodist Church, and has held various offices in all of these organizations. Hardesty holds an A.B. degree in political science from East Carolina University. He is married to the former Anita Windley, and they have three children. Surplus Food Program The Craven County Depart ment of Social Services announces that surplus food will be given away to the low income residents of Craven County at the National Guard Armory on South Gienburnie Drive in New Bern, North Carolina on Thursday, February 21, 1985, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The surplus food consists of cheese, butter, milk, honey, and rice, cornmeal or flour. To be eligible for the surplus food, one must be a food stamp recipient or live on a low income. Those who feel that they will meet the low imcome guidelines should go to the Department of Social Services located at 403 George Street and apply. Applications will be taken Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. January 31, 1985 is the deadline for the February 21st distribution. Low income eligibles have to reapply each quarter. In 1985 the Department also plans to distribute May 23, July 25, and October 24. Those who already receive food stamps will be mailed the necessary information to enable them to pick up the surplus food.
